Fr. John Higgins is a “Baby Boomer”, born in 1948 in Indianapolis Indiana to Dorothy and John Higgins. His father was killed two years later in the Korean war and he was raised by his single mom. They moved to California before he reached the age for Kindergarten and went to several elementary schools close to Los Angeles and then graduated from Downey High School in Downey, California where he played drums with the famous Karen Carpenter. He was raised in the Methodist Church, but after graduating from high school he became a Catholic. After completing an Associate in Arts, majoring in History Fr. John received the call to enter the Seminary in 1974. He received a Bachelor’s Degree and then a Master’s Degree from St. John’s Seminary and was ordained a Priest on June 6, 1981.
Fr. John has served in various parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and also taught in a Catholic High School. He loved teaching Church History and Doctrine.
After several assignments as Associate Pastor he was sent in to a few parishes as “Administrator” to straighten out a few problems and then named Pastor of St. Raymond Parish in his hometown of Downey, California. He has been Pastor there since 2006 and also serves as Chaplain for the Downey Firefighters and the Knights of Columbus. His parish is ethnically diverse and has about 2,000 registered families, a healthy Parish Elementary School and lots of parish ministries. At age 67 Fr. John is looking forward to many more years of service as a Priest.
