Islam and the West by Richard Metzger

Vatican-II-Large-Shot

Second Vatican Council, Lumen Gentium 16, November 21, 1964

“But the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place among whom are the Muslims: these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”

Second Vatican Council, Nostra Aetate 3, October 28, 1965

The Church has also a high regard for the Muslims. They worship God, who is one, living and subsistent, merciful and almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth (Cf. St. Gregory VII, Letter III, 21 to Anazir [Al-Nasir], King of Mauretania PL, 148.451A.), who has spoken to men. They strive to submit themselves without reserve to the hidden decrees of God, just as Abraham submitted himself to God’s plan, to whose faith Muslims eagerly link their own. Although not acknowledging him as God, they venerate Jesus as a prophet, his Virgin Mother they also honor, and even at times devoutly invoke.

Ever since the Second Vatican Council II there has been an unprecedented amount of efforts to dialogue and show good will with the followers of the Islamic faith. In the wake of recent attacks across Europe, the increased amount of violence towards Christians in the Middle East, as well as the unprecedented immigration of refugees from the Middle East in record numbers to the West, lets talk about Islam.

With the recent Martyrdom of Fr Jacques Hamel’s in France as he was saying Mass by two Jihadists and the subsequent response by Pope Francis on the 28th July to journalists :

“I would like to say one word to clarify. When I speak of war, I speak seriously of war, not a war of religion, no. There is a war of interests, there is war for money; there is war for nature’s resources: “He’s speaking of a war of religion.” No. All religions want peace. Others want war. Understood?”

and then on 1st August to journalists :

I don’t like to speak of Islamic violence …. Not all Muslims are violent; not all Catholics are violent. It’s like a fruit salad, there’s a bit of everything, there are violent individuals of these religions. One thing is true: I believe that in almost all the religions there is always a small fundamentalist group. ….. I believe it’s not right to identify Islam with violence. This isn’t right and it’s not true! …  Yes, we can say that so-called ISIS is an Islamic State that presents itself as violent, because when they have us see their identity cards they make us see how on the Libyan coast they cut the throats of Egyptians, or things of that sort. But this is a small fundamentalist group, which is called ISIS.  But we can’t say – I don’t think it’s true or right <to say> – that Islam is terrorist.

in response to the Popes comments, ISIS in their propaganda magazine Dabiq – By The Sword”

This is a divinely-warranted war between the Muslim nation and the nations of disbelief.

“The fact is, even if you were to stop bombing us, imprisoning us, torturing us, vilifying us, and usurping our lands, we would continue to hate you because our primary reason for hating you will not cease to exist until you embrace Islam. Even if you were to pay jizyah [tax for infidels] and live under the authority of Islam in humiliation, we would continue to hate you.

Clearly their is a contradiction of opinions and understanding of what is going on in relation with Islam and the West. So in order to unravel this paradox lets first look at the historical evidence. Is their a historical record of jihad (Holy War) on Christians? If so, is it a recent phenomena or does it have deep roots in the Islamic culture and belief system?

Artgate_Fondazione_Cariplo_-_Hayez_Francesco,_Papa_Urbano_II_sulla_piazza_di_Clermont_predica_la_prima_crociata

In the year 1094 Alexios I Komnenos, the Byzantine emperor, sent to the pope, Urban II, and asked for aid from the west against the Seljuq Turks, who taken nearly all of Asia Minor from him.

In the year 1095 At the council of Clermont Urban addressed a great crowd and urged all to go to the aid of the Greeks and to recover Palestine from the rule of the Muslims.

Blessed Pope Urban II – Speech at Council of Clermont, 1095, Fulcher of Chartres version.

(The acts of the council have not been preserved, but we have five accounts of the speech of Urban which were written by men who were present and heard him.)

“… your brethren who live in the east are in urgent need of your help, and you must hasten to give them the aid which has often been promised them. For, as the most of you have heard, the Turks and Arabs have attacked them and have conquered the territory of Romania [the Greek empire] as far west as the shore of the Mediterranean and the Hellespont, which is called the Arm of St. George. They have occupied more and more of the lands of those Christians, and have overcome them in seven battles. They have killed and captured many, and have destroyed the churches and devastated the empire. If you permit them to continue thus for awhile with impurity, the faithful of God will be much more widely attacked by them. …and to destroy that vile race from the lands of our friends. I say this to those who are present, it meant also for those who are absent. Moreover, Christ commands it.

“… O what a disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious with the name of Christ! With what reproaches will the Lord overwhelm us if you do not aid those who, with us, profess the Christian religion! …. now go against the infidels and end with victory this war which should have been begun long ago. …. let hem eagerly set out on the way with God as their guide.”

For the purpose of this article, I am not going to go into the specifics of the Crusades, they lasted for little more than a century as you can see in the map below. To be clear the Crusades were a response to over 4 Centuries of Jihad against Christians, resulting in countless deaths, rapes, sacrilege and slavery of millions of people. Were all the crusaders saints, certainly not, war is ugly most certainly atrocities were acted on by some crusaders and the sacking of Constantinople in 1204 is one of the worst crimes committed them. Not only did this cement the divide between West and East but it also led to the eventual fall of this incredibly important Christian city, the second Rome, to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.

Let me put this in context for you, imagine if the Vatican, Rome … fell today to an Islamic force, all the history, art, and uncountable amount of priceless artifacts would be lost forever. Not to mention the huge shock to the Church with many of the Bishops, Cardinals and Pope either dead or enslaved by their Islamic rulers. Shocking .. I know, well that is how the Christian world reacted to the fall of Constantinople, now called Istanbul, it was a great victory for Muslims and thus it should be no wonder that today many look towards Rome with a desire to put their mark on history alongside Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II.

“ISIS thinks that Rome is one of its primary goals and is in its timetable,” Robert Spencer, author of The Complete Infidel’s Guide to ISIS, said.

Muslim scholars say Muhammed prophesied that the two great Roman cities would be conquered: Constantinople and Rome.

OttomanEmpireIn1683.png

In the years 1683-1699 The Ottomans fail to conquer Vienna and as a result lose control of Hungaria and Morea.

After the Great Turkish War started in 1683, with a grand invasion force of 140,000 men marching on Vienna, supported by Protestant Hungarian noblemen rebelling against Habsburg rule. To stop the invasion, another Holy League was formed, composed of Austria and Poland (notably in the Battle of Vienna), Venetians and the Russian Empire. After winning the Battle of Vienna, the Ottomans fought on for another 16 years, losing control of Hungary and Transylvania in the process before finally desisting. The Holy Roman Empire signed the Treaty of Karlowitz with the Ottoman Empire in 1699. The battle marked the historic end of the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into Europe.

Although the Ottoman Turks were involved in wars during the 18th – 20th Century, for the sake of this article we are going to fast forward to the present time, as their strength and influence was greatly diminished following their defeat in the Battle of Vienna.

Part 3 : 21st Century

“By their fruits you shall know them” – Mathew 7:16

I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them” – Quran 8:12

Below is a non-exhaustive list of global Islamic attacks since 2000 on the West, to be clear their have been many documented Jihadist attacks since the 1970’s but again for the sake of space I have chosen to not add them into this article. Also worth mentioning is that this is only a list of attacks on Western soil by Islamist Jihadist and doesn’t include all the attacks that occur in Eastern Europe, Africa, The Middle East and Asia.

Hilaire Belloc, the great 20th century Catholic historian and poet, warned in 1929 that Islam would make a return to the world stage:

“….We shall almost certainly have to reckon with Islam in the near future. Perhaps, if we lose our Faith, it will rise. For after this subjugation of the Islamic culture by the nominally Christian had already been achieved, the political conquerors of that culture began to notice two disquieting features about it. The first was that its spiritual foundation proved immovable; the second that its area of occupation did not recede, but on the contrary slowly expanded…..

….In my own youth the decaying power of Islam (for it was still decaying) in the Near East was a strong menace to the peace of Europe. Those old people of whom I speak had grandparents in whose times Islam was still able to menace the West. The Turks besieged Vienna and nearly took it, less than a century before the American Declaration of Independence. Islam was then our superior, especially in military art. There is no reason why its recent inferiority in mechanical construction, whether military or civilian, should continue indefinitely. Even a slight accession of material power would make the further control of Islam by an alien culture difficult. A little more and there will cease that which our time has taken for granted, the physical domination of Islam by the disintegrated Christendom we know.

Part 4 : What does the Quran, Sira and Hadith say?

“By their fruits you shall know them”Mathew 7:16

I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them – Quran 8:12

All of Islam is based upon the Trilogy—Quran, Sira (Mohammed’s biography) and Hadith (his Traditions) Muslims believe the Quran to be the book of divine guidance revealed from God to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years and view the Quran as God’s final revelation to humanity. The Hadith, second only to the Qur’an in importance and authority, are collections of Islamic traditions and laws (Sunna). This includes traditional sayings of Muhammed and later Islamic sages. By the ninth century over 600,000 Hadith had been recorded; these were later edited down to about 25,000.

These are authoritative texts in Islam and thus bear authority, so lets see what they say …

“….When Mohammed was close to forty years old he was in a cave at the foot of Mt. Hira three miles outside Mecca. In this cave he believes he had a visitation from the angel Gabriel in which Gabriel said to Mohammed, “Read.” Mohammed said in reply, “I do not read.” Mohammed says Gabriel pressed the words upon his heart. When Mohammed woke up later on the mountain he heard a voice say, “O Mohammed! Thou art the messenger of Allah and I am Gabriel…..

… But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while and the Prophet became so sad as we have heard that he intended several times to throw himself from the tops of high mountains and every time he went up the top of a mountain in order to throw himself down, Gabriel would appear before him and say, “O Muhammad! You are indeed Allah’s Apostle in truth” whereupon his heart would become quiet and he would calm down and would return home.  And whenever the period of the coming of the inspiration used to become long, he would do as before, but when he used to reach the top of a mountain, Gabriel would appear before him and say to him what he had said before.  – The Hadith of Bukhari, 9111

Scholars and theologians have made a case against Mohammed’s angelic revelation being the angel Gabriel and rather a demonic spirit because of his continuous desire to commit suicide after speaking to a supposed angel of God. Not a good start, but what about Islam being a religion of peace? It is difficult to support that claim when Mohammed himself waged jihad and spoke strongly in favor of it. It is important to note that although the Quran has many texts on peace, these are older and in Islamic tradition the newer texts in the Quran supersede the older ones when contradictions appear and surely enough these are the jihad texts.

Quran – Not an exhaustive list

“Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority”. (3:151)

“They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks.” (4:89)

“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement” (5:33)

Fight against them so that Allah will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people.”  (9:14)

“And when We wish to destroy a town, We send Our commandment to the people of it who lead easy lives, but they transgress therein; thus the word proves true against it, so We destroy it with utter destruction.” (17:16)

O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness.” (9:123)

Surely Allah loves those who fight in His cause” (61:4)

Hadith and Sira – Not an exhaustive list

The Prophet… was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, “They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans).” Sahih Bukhari (52:256)

Allah’s Apostle saip0ol0-pd to fight the people till they say: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah’. And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally.” Bukhari (8:387)

“The Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people so long as they do not declare that there is no god but Allah.” Muslim (1:30)

“Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Know that Paradise is under the shades of swords’.” Bukhari (52:73)

“Abu Dharr reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, which of the deeds is the best? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Belief in Allah and Jihad in His cause…” Muslim (1:149)

“Killing Unbelievers is a small matter to us” – Muhammad, Tabari (9:69)

Cutting off someone’s head while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ is an Islamic tradition that began with Muhammad.  In this passage, a companion of Muhammad recounts an episode in which he staged a surprise ambush on a settlement: I leapt upon him and cut off his head and ran in the direction of the camp shouting ‘Allah akbar’ and my two companions did likewise Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 990

Part 5 : Islam a Christian Heresy?

“By their fruits you shall know them”Mathew 7:16

I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them – Quran 8:12

The Catechism of the Catholic Church

2089 “Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; [Code of Canon Law c.751]

Islamic sources tell how a heretical Christian monk had an influence on the young Muhammad. Moreover, Muhammad’s first wife Khadija belonged to a heretical Christian sect since she was familiar with the God of Abraham, Jesus, Mary, and the angel Gabriel. Khadija once consulted a monk about Muhammad and the monk was named Nestora. Given the time period and geography and name, we are likely dealing with Nestorian branch of heretical Christians having influence over Khadija and her husband Muhammad.

Nestorianism was a heresy that denied that the baby Jesus born of the Virgin Mary was the Divine Son of God. Rather, the heretic Nestorius taught that the historical Jesus Christ was a combination of two persons: the Son of God (one divine person) and the historical and human Jesus son of Mary (one human person). Catholic orthodox teaches that Jesus Christ is one Divine Person with a Divine Nature and a Human Nature united but not confused or commingled.

  1. Muhammad taught that Jesus Christ is not divine.
  2. Muhammad taught that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God.
  3. Muhammad taught that the Trinity was “the Father and the Son and the Virgin Mary.” He didn’t properly understand the Christian teaching on the Trinity.
  4. Muhammad taught that there was no such thing as a Trinity of Divine Persons as Christians profess.
  5. Muhammad taught that there are no sacraments (eg, no baptism, Eucharist) but only a profession of faith (shahada).
  6. Muhammad taught that lying is allowed. It’s the al-Taqiyya deception. Muhammad said that Muslims can lie to non-Muslims.
  7. Mohammad taught that Jesus did not die on the cross and therefore denied salvation through the cross of Christ.
  8. Mohammad denied that marraige is monogamous or sacramental.
  9. Mohammad denied the existence of a “Church” and instead had the “State” stand in as the organizing principle, hence the imperative for Sharia Law.

The Fount of Knowledge by Saint John Damascene Concerning Heresies

“…. a false prophet named Mohammed has appeared in their midst. This man, after having chanced upon the Old and New Testaments and likewise, it seems, having conversed with an Arian monk, devised his own heresy. Then, having insinuated himself into the good graces of the people by a show of seeming piety, he gave out that a certain book had been sent down to him from heaven. He had set down some ridiculous compositions in this book of his and he gave it to them as an object of veneration.”….

“….And he says that the Jews wanted to crucify Him in violation of the law, and that they seized His shadow and crucified this. But the Christ Himself was not crucified, he says, nor did He die, for God out of His love for Him took Him to Himself into heaven.”….

“…And he says this, that when the Christ had ascended into heaven God asked Him: ‘O Jesus, didst thou say: “I am the Son of God and God”?’ And Jesus, he says, answered: ‘Be merciful to me, Lord. Thou knowest that I did not say this and that I did not scorn to be thy servant. But sinful men have written that I made this statement, and they have lied about me and have fallen into error.’ And God answered and said to Him: ‘I know that thou didst not say this word.” There are many other extraordinary and quite ridiculous things in this book which he boasts was sent down to him from God.”…

Depiction of Mohammed in Hell for the sin of Heresy

The Great Heresies by Hilaire Belloc Chapter IV :The Great and Enduring Heresy of Mohammed

“… Mohammedanism was a <heresy>: that is the essential point to grasp before going any further. It began as a heresy, not as a new religion. It was not a pagan contrast with the Church; it was not an alien enemy. It was a perversion of Christian doctrine. It vitality and endurance soon gave it the appearance of a new religion, but those who were contemporary with its rise saw it for what it was not a denial, but an adaptation and a misuse, of the Christian thing. It differed from most (not from all) heresies in this, that it did not arise within the bounds of the Christian Church. The chief heresiarch, Mohammed himself, was not, like most heresiarchs, a man of Catholic birth and doctrine to begin with. He sprang from pagans. But that which he taught was in the main Catholic doctrine, oversimplified. It was the great Catholic world on the frontiers of which he lived, whose influence was all around him and whose territories he had known by travel which inspired his convictions. He came of, and mixed with, the degraded idolaters of the Arabian wilderness, the conquest of which had never seemed worth the Romans’ while.

… But the central point where this new heresy struck home with a mortal blow against Catholic tradition was a full denial of the Incarnation. Mohammed did not merely take the first steps toward that denial, as the Arians and their followers had done; he advanced a clear affirmation, full and complete, against the whole doctrine of an incarnate God. He taught that Our Lord was the greatest of all the prophets, but still only a prophet: a man like other men. He eliminated the Trinity altogether. With that denial of the Incarnation went the whole sacramental structure. He refused to know anything of the Eucharist, with its Real Presence; he stopped the sacrifice of the Mass, and therefore the institution of a special priesthood. In other words, he, like so many other lesser heresiarchs, founded his heresy on simplification.”

Mohammed in Hell for Heresy – Dantes Inferno

It is important for us to understand that Islam is a Heresy so we can better address the problem, much like a doctor must know the symptoms of an ailment in order to treat it properly. Islam is not of the book (Bible), being a heresy gives Christians the right understanding, we cannot encourage them to be the best Muslims they can be as they are outside the Body of Christ. As Christians we have to follow through with the Great Commision that Christ has commanded us to do …

“Going therefore, teach ye all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.” – Mathew 28:19-20

Sadly, this Heresy has deep roots in large parts of the world and with the recent influx of refugees throughout the west the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has succeeded where over a millenia of Islamic Jihad has failed, in flowering Islam throughout a spiritually stagnant Europe.

“Whoever does not embrace the Catholic Christian faith is lost, like your false prophet Muhammad.”

-St. Peter Mavimenus (d. 8th century), martyr from Gaza. Response reported in the Martyriologum Romanum when he was asked to convert to Islam by a group of Muslims.

“We profess Christ to be truly God and your prophet to be a precursor of the Antichrist and other profane doctrine.

-Sts. Habenitus, Jeremiah, Peter, Sabinian, Walabonsus, and Wistremundus (d. 851), martyrs of Cordoba, Spain. Reported in the Memoriale Sanctorum in response to Spanish Umayyad Caliph ‘Abd Ar-Rahman II’s ministers that they convert to Islam on pain of death.

Any cult which denies the divinity of Christ, does not profess the existence of the Holy Trinity, refutes baptism, defames Christians, and derogates the priesthood, we consider to be damned.

-Sts. Aurelius, Felix, George, Liliosa, and Natalia (d. 852), martyrs of Cordoba, Spain. Reported in the Memoriale Sanctorum in response to Spanish Umayyad Caliph ‘Abd Ar-Rahman II’s ministers that they convert to Islam on pain of death.

“On the other hand, those who founded sects committed to erroneous doctrines proceeded in a way that is opposite to this, the point is clear in the case of Muhammad. He seduced the people by promises of carnal pleasure to which the concupiscence of the flesh goads us. His teaching also contained precepts that were in conformity with his promises, and he gave free rein to carnal pleasure. In all this, as is not unexpected, he was obeyed by carnal men. As for proofs of the truth of his doctrine, he brought forward only such as could be grasped by the natural ability of anyone with a very modest wisdom. Indeed, the truths that he taught he mingled with many fables and with doctrines of the greatest falsity. He did not bring forth any signs produced in a supernatural way, which alone fittingly gives witness to divine inspiration; for a visible action that can be only divine reveals an invisibly inspired teacher of truth. On the contrary, Muhammad said that he was sent in the power of his arms—which are signs not lacking even to robbers and tyrants.

-St. Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274), Theologian and Doctor of the Church. Quoted from his De Rationibus Fidei Contra Saracenos, Graecos, et Armenos and translated from Fr. Damian Fehlner’sAquinas on Reasons for the Faith: Against the Muslims, Greeks, and Armenians (Franciscans of the Immaculate. 2002.).

It is an insult to the holy name and a disgrace to the christian faith that in certain parts of the world subject to christian princes where Saracens live, sometimes apart, sometimes intermingled with Christians, the Saracen priests commonly called Zabazala, in their temples or mosques, in which the Saracens meet to adore the infidel Mahomet, loudly invoke and extol his name each day at certain hours from a high place, in the hearing of both Christians and Saracens and there make public declarations in his honour. There is a place, moreover, where once was buried a certain Saracen whom other Saracens venerate as a saint. A great number of Saracens flock there quite openly from far and near. This brings disrepute on our faith and gives great scandal to the faithful. These practices cannot be tolerated any further without displeasing the divine majesty.  We therefore, with the sacred council’s approval, strictly forbid such practices henceforth in christian lands. We enjoin on catholic princes, one and all, who hold sovereignty over the said Saracens and in whose territory these practices occur, and we lay on them a pressing obligation under the divine judgment that, as true Catholics and zealous for the christian faith, they give consideration to the disgrace heaped on both them and other Christians. They are to remove this offence altogether from their territories and take care that their subjects remove it, so that they may thereby attain the reward of eternal happiness. They are to forbid expressly the public invocation of the sacrilegious name of Mahomet. They shall also forbid anyone in their dominions to attempt in future the said pilgrimage or in any way give countenance to it. Those who presume to act otherwise are to be so chastised by the princes for their irreverence, that others may be deterred from such boldness.

Pope Clement V, Council of Vienne, 1311-1312

“… there is hope that very many from the abominable sect of Mahomet will be converted to the Catholic faith.”

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Basel, 1434

“As we have seen, Muhammed had neither supernatural miracles nor natural motives of reason to persuade those of his sect. As he lacked in everything, he took to bestial and barbaric means, which is the force of arms. Thus he introduced and promulgated his message with robberies, murders, and bloodshedding, destroying those who did not want to receive it, and with the same means his ministers conserve this today, until God placates his anger and destroys this pestilence from the earth.

[…]

(Muhammad) can also be figured for the dragon in the same Apocalypse which says that the dragon swept up a third of the stars and hurled down a third to earth. Although this line is more appropriately understood concerning the Antichrist, Mohammed was his precursor – the prophet of Satan, father of the sons of haughtiness.

[…]

Even if all the things contained in his law were fables in philosophy and errors in theology, even for those who do not possess the light of reason, the very manners (Islam) teaches are from a school of vicious bestialities. (Muhammad) did not prove his new sect with any motive, having neither supernatural miracles nor natural reasons, but solely the force of arms, violence, fictions, lies, and carnal license. It remains an impious, blasphemous, vicious cult, an innovention of the devil, and the direct way into the fires of hell. It does not even merit the name of being called a religion.

-St. Juan de Ribera (d.1611), Archbishop of Valencia, missionary to Spanish Muslims, and organizer of the Muslim expulsions of 1609 from Spain. Quoted in several locations from his 1599 Catechismo para la Instruccion de los Nuevos Convertidos de los Moros.

We designated that abuse as a cowardly concealment of the Christian profession, approaching infidelity. Since then, We have learned with great mental anguish that many people in that province continue to take Turkish or Mohammedan names despite the consideration of their eternal salvation. They do so not only in order to be immune and free from those taxes and burdens which have often been and continue to be imposed on the faithful of Christ, but also in order that neither they themselves nor their parents may be thought to have abandoned the Mohammedan sect, thereby avoiding the requisite penalties. For all this cannot take place without a pretense of the errors of Mohammed, even if the faith of Christ is adhered to in the heart, and this is at variance with Christian sincerity. It involves a lie in a most serious matter and includes a virtual denial of the Faith, most insulting to God and scandalous to their neighbors. It even gives the Turks themselves a suitable opportunity to rate all Christ’s faithful as hypocrites and deceivers, and accordingly to persecute them justly and deservedly. Our sorrow and anguish is further increased by the fact that some of you yourselves, venerable brothers, and of you also, beloved sons, parish priests and missionaries, take no measures against so vile and hateful a pretense. In fact, some of you even connive at it; by being impressed by empty motives to find excuses for sins, you do not hesitate to allow those who take common Turkish or Mohammedan names and desire to be addressed by them, to partake of the Sacraments with no pang of conscience at all, to the public offense of the obedient faithful. We who are entrusted with the care of all the churches and the supreme administration of the sacred Apostolate; in this capacity, We are obliged to lead all Christians back to the way of salvation and to present them to God pure and sincere, walking in the spirit and in truth without stain….We first renew and confirm by Our Apostolic authority in this letter the praiseworthy canon of the council of your province of Albania, and We command that it be strictly observed. Also We extend the decrees of Our church by the same authority and uniformity to include your province; We equally strictly prohibit any of Christ’s faithful from daring to take Turkish or Mohammedan names in order to be considered Mohammedans, in any case, under any pretext, or in any conceivable circumstances.

Pope Benedict XIV Quod Provinciale 1754

The Mahometan paradise, however, is only fit for beasts; for filthy sensual pleasure is all the believer has to expect there.

St. Alfonsus Liguori (d. 1787). Quoted from his book, The History of Heresies and their Refutation.

Judging by the historical record not only is it likely but we can conclude without question that the Jihad will continue to be waged and in all likely hood will be increased and intensified in the coming years to come. Islam has a rich tradition from its inception of Jihad that spans its entire history and in fact it is the Jihad that is responsible for Islams global spread and influence. For this and future generations who want to live their Islamic faith devoutly, most paths to Islamic holiness lead to Jihad. Whether ISIS/ISIL/IS achieve their goal of establishing a globally recognized Caliphate, remains to be seen, but whether they don’t or do is not the point, someone else will pick up the Jihadist torch to war.

So what are we to do? Firstly, live our faith daily, give yourself a silent hour a day, find a quiet place, I recommend going to Church and just silently pray and let God whisper to your soul. For whatever reason, God chose you personally to be alive in this day and age, so let’s make the most of it. Find people with similar spiritual interests, get a spiritual director and if possible attend daily mass and pray for the Pope.

Things need to get much worse before they get better for the Church, governments and the people are going to need to face a hard reality soon but it goes without question that the world is under a spiritual and carnal attack like never before. A secularist West is completely unequipped to deal with Jihad and until we return society and governments to the Church we will continue to misdiagnose this religious war. Saints are needed. Lets start the new Reconquista of our faith … Time to fight the good fight!
